The Mars Volta - octahedron

Release date: 26th of June, 2009

4/5

Length: 53:23

Label: Universal Music

The 5th studio album of intellectual and suphisticated mexicans came just a year after the sick Bedlam. This time it is maths they've decided to concentrate on, simply as that. But no logic came, as it never did before.

You can try as hard as you can, but you will not understand what it is all about, as it is musical surrealism they put into words, not that aggressive and passionate as their previous recordings, still melodic in choruses and with absolutely fascinating Cedric Bixler Zavala's vocals. This is their slowest album, even though the culmination comes to Luciforms, exploding the solo guitar.

Recommended tracks: With Twightlight As My Guide, Cotapaxi, Desperate Graves

Dan Deacon - Bromst

Release date: March 24th, 2009

Label: Carpark Records

5/5
Length: 1h
Get older, get your Wet Wings, says Dan Deacon an electronic Avant-gardist from Baltimore. One of the top experimental bands these days among with Gang Gang Dance, The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow.
The new record released a while ago, still takes a while to chew it propally. He is still on his own, but sounds at least like a trio.
New album is resonant, cheerful & noisy, but the variety of sounds is enormous, it is crazy like a kindergarden. Image your young brother playing old computer games, pressing one button all the time, imagine this in a dance rythm, with a blank TV-screen sound on the backgroung, this is Bromst!
Recommended tracks: Build Voice, Red F, Woof Woof.

Rainbow Arabia - The Basta EP

Release date: 2nd of September, 2008

5/5

Label: UK label Merok

Length: 20:40

Today music is overdosed with a heavy amount of everything and nothing, and to understand who is worth listening nowadays is a hard exercise, and being able to sing or play the guitar is not enought, you have to be a bit deviant and weird. This is what New Weird America seems to be doing, bringing to life their new fresh pixies of avant-garde.

Rainbow Arabia is another couple with electronic drums, but.. if you have not heard them before, then you have not heard anything like that at all. They are definitely one of the most original bands of the 21st century, where the number of new bands seems to be bigger then the amount of stars in the universe. It is like New Year's clapper, bright and loud, flying out with Lebanese synthesizers and serpentine guitar lines, psychedelic, tribal world sounds of Arabia and female yelling make the great mixture of punk-dance ethnic tunes in terror act costumes they look and sound weird. They are aboriginal population of everything and nothing deviant.

Recommended tracks:Letthem Dance, See no Hear No, The Basta

Both of their videos are strongly recommended to be watched:

The Horrors - Primary Colors

Release date: 5th of May, 2009

5/5
Label: XL
Length: 45:40
And i thought i would not come back to them after the first album which i most definitely over listened, and made The Horrors band nr. one in my last.fm charts for quite a while. Even though Chriss Cunnigham does NOT work with losers; he always chooses promissing bands and makes masterpieces, so MTV cannot show them,so i thought they are a bit too young for me, and their garage spirit will die soon.
The blurred cover of the new album says nothing but the boring expectation.
And all this is wrong, because they have changed the style, the young guys turned into adults, keeping their tight trousers to themselves. Now The Horrors remind me of My Bloody Valentine mixed with Joy Division. The gothic dark spirit is still there, but the punk is gone forever, punk's dead.
If you never loved them, you will now. And if you already did? Well, you’ll love them even more...NME --------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Horrors live review:Well, the answer is all of the above and much, much more besides. Whatever you think, or thought, about The Horrors, get ready to change your mind. The ambush release of the eight-minute krautgaze thrum of ‘Sea Within A Sea’ was the sort of disorientating shock we didn’t think bands could pull off any more in these days of leaks, rumours and over-exposure. Like an irritating younger sibling who without warning morphs overnight into a really cool person that you actually want to hang out with, they’re suddenly a totally different band.NME
Recommended tracks: Sea within a sea, Mirror's image, Who can say.

Length: 41:00
Pshychedelic, noisy, loud, melancholic, shoegazy, american and strange. Almoust like gothic punk. Dark and doomy. If played too suddenly your windows might crack! Nothing more to add.

Shock cinema - hell and highwater

Release date: 22nd of July, 2008

4/5
Label: Shock Cinema
Length: 33:59
There is nothing shocking about this Brooklyn's band, it is just a great female vocalist's album, a bit dreamy at some places, post-punky in its drum beats (slightly less than their EP "Our Way is Revenge"). Noisy guitar parts mixed with quite truthful lyrics about all this love things and juxtapositions. Oh well,...
Recommended tracks: Oddfellow, Albatross, Wax Wings

Voodoo Economics - If : then :: iminami

Release date: 2007; possibly there is no official date for it
4/5
Label: Voodoo Economics (Do you need a label in the 21st century? Do you want to share your honestly earned money and lick their asses?)
Length: 41:18
The album is freely available for downloading on last.fm , but it is worth paying! A penetraiting voice, nice melodies, long song titles, lyrics with sense, what else do you need for being original? Live gigs!? Have not seen them live yet, so cannot tell you whether they can do it live, but album is definitely well structured. She has got a birdy voice, accompanied by deep bass lines and electronic distortion . Nothing too much, everything is just about perfect.
Recommended tracks: Hit soft like a featherload of bricks, You sleuth you;, Formes of clay, fire, soot and bone.

Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck

Release date: 4th of November, 2005
5/5
Label: Holy Fuck
Length: 50:28
The 20th century was an intelectual century with all its Beatles and teenspirit smells, therefore the 21st century turned into post-modern assholness and amusing FUCKS, where no limits or rules are followed, and to be fucked up, pressing fuck buttons is OK. Holy Fuck is another statement of being present, as the math rock was invented in the 21st century, at least it was calculated just recently, and if you can find similar sounding bands in the 20th century, just let me know. Live bass and live drums, synth-keyboards and neverending rythmic melodies blow you away, because this is holy fuck, man!
Recommended tracks: Super Inuit, Korock, Tonebank Computer
homepage: do they need a homepage? it's all about myspace and last.fm now!

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Release date: 6th of April, 2009

4/5

Label: EMI UK
Length: 44:51

Natasha is defenitely a talanted charming young lady, and her 1st album we remember because of the nice animal-headed video "What's a girl to do", where she is cycling through the dark forest, telling us that her love is over.
The Sunday Times gave 5 stars to the new CD and called it the "record of the week". Atmospheric, ethnic tunes, yet her singing sometimes reminds me of Sinéad O'Connor's early 90s vocals, especially the single "Daniel". Anyway, looking at the cover with the two suns indeed, you see a pixie rather than just a human being, that is why she deserves to be admired.
Recommended tracks: Glass, Sleep Alone, The Big Sleep
Plus check out the double album "Perfect as Cats:Tribute to the Cure", where she covered " A Forest".

Beta Satan - Girls

Release date: 10th of September, 2008

5/5
Label: Crunchy Frog
Length: 37:45
The debut album of Danish electronic punks make you wanna move your ass. A good sense of humour, represented in the open minded video clip where a "guy" watches a strip of another "guy" ,who is actually himself , makes you confused - guys, are you gays? Who cares! This is "social ignorance", the "devil" disco, satanic punk, so be scared, sinner!
